Property-Tax Affordability
How heavy is the property-tax burden on a typical home relative to local incomes? For each West Virginia county we estimate the annual property tax on the county’s median-value home (owner-occupied) and compare it to the county’s median household income. A higher percentage means the typical tax bill eats a bigger share of a typical household’s income.
How to read this: a county-level proxy, not a per-household figure.
Incomes and home values are U.S. Census ACS 5-year estimates; the tax is computed
on the median home value using WV’s 60% assessment ratio, the
$20,000 homestead exemption, and the county’s
owner-occupied Class II base levy (no municipal add-on, no excess/bond levies).
Your own bill depends on your home’s value, town, exemptions, and class.
